Technical Bulletin #2 Anchor Bolt Sizing, Spacing and Base PlatesThe International Building Code (IBC) Defers All Anchor Bolt Design To American Concrete Institute (ACI). The Proper Anchor Bolt Design Provided By The ACI Is Very Lengthy And Complicated. In Short, Anchor Bolts Are To Be Checked For Tension And Shear At The Same Time. 5/8” Diameter Anchor Bolts Just Don’t Work Very Well To This Standard. The ACI’s Method Of Anchor Bolt Design Also Makes 3” Bolt Gauge Virtually Impossible To Use. It Is More Prudent And Advantageous To Utilize 3/4” Diameter Anchor Bolts With A 4” Gauge Using A Min. 8” Wide Base Plate.
